Friday night the Christmas season officially kicked off in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County with the lighting of the county Christmas tree on the historic Public Square.

The tree lighting, which has grown into a major event in a relatively few short years, is a joyous example of a marvelous holiday season in our community.

A wide range of observances of the season, including those not involving Christmas but also celebrated at this time of the year, are offered in this community with the vast majority free events open to the public and directly family oriented.

Christmas, being observed by the vast majority, takes up most of the stage with celebrations of secular and spiritual nature filling the calendar to overflowing.

The tree lighting is certainly a major, notable event as is the annual Murfreesboro Christmas Parade set for next Sunday, which annually attracts thousands regardless of weather conditions.

While The Post Top 10 last week noted the biggest events and can be accessed at murfreesboropost.com along with many other holiday events under the online calendar, also worthy of special mention is Southeast Baptist’s Church annual Bethlehem Marketplace, a huge volunteer undertaking that offers a marvelous and unique celebration of the religious origin of the Christmas season.

The season will also see an immense outpouring of community charity to those in need of everything from toys for children to a friendly visit to nursing home patients.

Individuals express their joy for the season in one time-honored way by Christmas decorations, including delightful light displays for the enjoyment of others as recognized in our Holiday Brites listing.

While we can continue the enduring debate about the commercialism of Christmas and separation of church and state, the celebration of the season remains well and manifest in our community.

In the spirit of Christmas we would all do well to participate, celebrate and donate to the cheer and joy around us and truly embody the season.
