It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally arrived.

In a joint press conference Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development and the city of Eagleville met at City Hall and announced that federal government will provide more than $1 million in emergency grant funding so that a much needed sewer project can get underway.

The $2.6 million dollar sewer system will eliminate the run off from the failing septic tanks which pose possible public health hazards to the residents.

Neighbors have complained for years that when it rains, they can’t walk down the streets of Eagleville due to the smell.

Installing a new wastewater infrastructure for public safety is key to economic growth, according to city leaders.

Beginning a couple of years ago, when Sam Tune became mayor of Eagleville, his main objective was to fight for a sewer. By the crowd of senators, respresentative and congressman in attendance on Wednesday, it was obvious his work has paid off for the community of Eagleville.

In addition to sewer lines, the Consolidate Utility District will also install new water lines.

This will provide quality, quantity and fire protection, he said. Another important factor, CUD would not be making the new waterline improvements at this time if it were not for sewer.

The project is expected to go to bid in March, with construction beginning in April or May.  Project planners estimate the project will be completed in six to nine months.

I am glad USDA will provide $1,005,000 in grant money to the sewer project. Pressing an issue for too long can be very hazardous. Even though Eagleville is a small community a "long-waited" sewer problem could have caused damage to schools, children and outside environments. The fact that neighbors have complained for years about the problem and nothing has got done shows a lack of effort on those who have not succeeded in getting plans going. Is getting a new sewer line a government handled issue? It said that the project for the system would be 2.6 million dollars, what about the other half? Is it not the USDA’s funding or is it the county? A lot of appreciation goes out to the Mayor, Sam Tune, for pressing the issue to government officials. I know many people are very excited about what the new water waste system will do for them. Voicing your opinion is one thing, but sometimes it needs to be taken a step further to get the opinion taken into consideration. By coming together and making the issue as big as it was allowed the problem to get fixed. Overall, I think it is detrimental to not take situations like this likely .
