The Eagleville Eagles baseball team played in the state tournament for the first time in school history this year.

On Wednesday night, the magical season ended with a 6-2 loss to Adamsville in the 2010 BlueCross SpringFling played at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

After a long weather delay, the Cardinals rocked Eagleville junior starting pitcher Michael Davenport with four runs in the top of the first. The Eagles answered by putting a run across in the bottom of the inning, when sophomore Cameron Boyett scored on a fielder’s choice by senior Tyler Davenport.

Adamsville added a run in the second and the sixth, while the Eagles scored in the third on a single by Boyett that scored senior Kevin Brown.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles lost their first game of the tournament to Boyd Buchanan, 7-2. The Buccaneers, who were also making their first state trip, jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after four innings

Already down 5-0 in the bottom of the second, Eagleville had runners on the corners and one out. Junior Cody Martin hit a sharp linedrive to the Buccaneer third baseman, but the ball was caught. He also beat sliding senior Tyler Davenport back to the bag for the double play to finish the inning.

“It was a great play by them,” Eagleville head coach Travis Moore said. “They did a good job.”

The Eagles added a run in the sixth, when Tyler Davenport walked and brought in sophomore Ryan Hammonds. The bases were still loaded, but fellow sophomore Warner struck out swinging to end the threat. Eagleville also scored in the seventh.

Hammonds began the tournament by pitching a gem in a 9-3 win over Hancock County on Tuesday night. He tied a state record with 16 strikeouts and only gave up four hits. The strikeout record had only occurred three other times with the last coming in 2008, when Phillip Pfeifer fanned 16 Lincoln County batters for Farragut.

Moore said the team enjoyed the experience of being the tournament and the fan support that made the trip.

“It’s been a great experience, being here in Rutherford County,” Moore said. “It’s so neat to have the Eagleville community support us.”

The Eagles finished the season with a 24-15 record and won the district and region.
