A Smyrna man who had an active warrant for failing to appear in court was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday when police allegedly observed him driving recklessly around the Square.

Eric M. Grissom, 33, has been charged with a DUI second offense and failure to appear for a previous driving on a suspended license charge, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report.

“I was assisting Sgt. Mike Turner on a traffic stop, which was conducted for reckless driving around the Square,” Officer Ricky Haley reported. “I made contact with Grissom, who had an odor of an alcoholic intoxicant, glassy blood shot eyes, and slurred speech.”

Haley reported that when he was asked to step out of the vehicle, Grissom appeared to be unsteady on his feet.

“I then explained and demonstrated field sobriety tasks, and (he) agreed to attempt them,” Haley reported. “Grissom did not conduct the (tests) as were shown, and I felt that he was intoxicated to a level making him unsafe for the operation of a motor vehicle.”

Grissom was then taken into custody and transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, at which point Haley learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest. He was then booked into jail and held on a $7,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing has since been scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, in General Sessions Court.
