A Murfreesboro man could be charged with attempted murder after allegedly running over his ex-wife’s boyfriend and fleeing the scene.
Michael Dennis Jr., 23, of Volunteer Road, was arrested just after midnight Tuesday and charged with DUI and violation of implied consent following an altercation with his ex-wife Caitlin Dennis, 24, and her current boyfriend Jonathan Smits, 24, both of Jones Boulevard.
Caitlin Dennis reported Michael Dennis had sent threatening text messages to Smits earlier in the evening.
“A short time later, Michael Dennis Jr. showed up at (the Jones Boulevard address) and called Jonathan Smits to go outside and confront him,” MPD Officer Rathana Sidadouangleuth reported.
Smits walked out of the house as Michael Dennis drove past, Caitlin Dennis told police.
Michael Dennis “then made a U-turn and accelerated toward Mr. Smits and running him over with the vehicle,” Sidadouangleuth said.
Michael Dennis then fled the scene and was later stopped at the Interstate 24 and Highway 96 interchange by Officer James Smith and Officer Kenneth White.
White reported Michael Dennis was allegedly unsteady on his feet, smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests.
Michael Dennis was arrested and booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where he was held on a $3,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on June 20.
Smits was taken to MTMC where he was treated for his injuries.
