A 33-year-old Manchester man who does not have a valid license was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence after he was caught allegedly weaving in and out of the median on South Church Street.

David Perez, who is a native of Mexico, has been charged with a DUI first offense and driving without a license, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report filed by Officer Jacob Fountain.

“I observed a vehicle (at the intersection of) South Church Street and Rutherford Boulevard stop for a green light in the right turn lane,” Fountain reported. “The vehicle then proceeded through the light and (began) traveling in the median.”

Fountain reported Perez was unable to maintain a lane of travel, at which point he conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of South Church Street.

“I made contact with Perez, who had a strong odor of intoxicant, bloodshot watery eyes and was unsteady on his feet,” he reported.

Because Perez did not speak English, a deputy with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene to translate field sobriety test instructions.

“Perez agreed to do field sobriety tests but was unable to perform as demonstrated and explained by (the deputy,)” Fountain reported, adding he then learned Perez did not have a driver’s license or any state-issued identification card.

Perez was placed under arrest and transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, where he was held on a $1,750 bond. He is scheduled to appear April 11 in General Sessions Court.
