A Shelbyville man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after leaving Gilligan’s Bar on Saturday in a vehicle owned by his girlfriend, who he allegedly assaulted moments before fleeing the scene.
Richard D. John, 26, has been charged with a DUI first offense, domestic assault and violation of an order of protection, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report filed by Officer Christopher Wilkerson.
The latter charge was filed because John’s girlfriend had an active order of protection against him out of Bedford County when the incident occurred, according to the report.
According to a separate domestic violence report, John’s girlfriend told police she was dancing with a girl friend when he became angry, approached her and began yelling. He then grabbed her by the hair and pulled her off the dance floor.
“Security (said they) then stepped in and pulled him away from her,” Officer Klint Hill reported, adding after John was kicked out of the club, he drove away in the woman’s car.
Witnesses also gave statements supporting those given by the club’s security guards, at which point other officers were informed to be on the lookout for John and the woman’s vehicle. Police spotted John a short time later.
After failing field sobriety tests, John was taken into custody and transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, where he was charged accordingly. He was held on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear March 13 in General Sessions Court.
