A Murfreesboro man whose license is suspended was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early Tuesday after being pulled over for driving erratically and speeding down Fourth Avenue.

John A. Loop, 32, was pulled over just before 2 a.m., when an officer spotted him driving more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and East Main Street, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report.

“I conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that I observed weaving in its lane crossing the dotted center line on three different occasions,” Officer John Watson reported. “The vehicle was also observed traveling 41 mph in a 30-mph zone.”

Watson reported the New Orleans native appeared to be intoxicated, noting he had a strong odor of an intoxicant about his person.

“Loop’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was somewhat slurred, (and) he was also unsteady on his feet,” Watson reported, adding he was then asked to complete field sobriety tests.

When Loop failed to complete the tasks as demonstrated, he was taken into custody and transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, where he reportedly refused to submit to a blood alcohol test.

Loop has since been charged with a DUI first offense, violation of the implied consent law, and driving on a suspended license.

He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on all the charges Thursday, Nov. 15, in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
