One repeat drunk driver charged with killing another driver was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison.

Drunk driver Steven Davis, 28, of Unionville, pleaded guilty to killing driver Thomas Morris Jr., 46, of Spring Leaf Court in a traffic crash Jan. 4 on Versailles Road in Rockvale.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Marvin reported at the time Davis was driving under the influence of alcohol when he crossed the center line and struck Morris head-on.

Davis was charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide of Morris, one count for his blood-alcohol content being .21 and the second count for having a prior DUI conviction. A blood-alcohol level of .08 is considered driving under the influence of alcohol in Tennessee.

He was also charged with third offense DUI and possession of a Schedule III drug. Davis had a criminal history of two other DUIs in February 2001 and February 2005.

Davis testified it was his idea to plead guilty. Assistant Public Defender Rusty Perkins, who represented Davis, and Assistant District Attorney Jennings Jones worked out a plea.

He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of vehicular homicide. He must serve about four years before being eligible for parole. His driver’s license will be suspended three years.

Circuit Court Judge Don Ash asked Morris’ daughter, Macy, if the plea was acceptable.

“Yes sir,” Macy Morris replied.

Ash asked Davis if he pleaded guilty because he is guilty?

“Yes sir,” Davis answered.

Davis agreed he exchanged a certain sentence of 12 years for an uncertain sentence of 15 to 25 years if convicted by a jury of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Jones asked Davis if he drank alcohol before the crash.

Davis replied he did.

Ash sentenced Davis to 12 years in prison, reminding him he could serve the entire sentence and not be released early on parole. He must give a DNA sample.

Now i think these are the type of crimes that happen everyday you liberal people should worry about, Instead of legal gun permit holders.

There are so many drunk drivers on the road that never get caught, because somehow they get lucky i guess?

I see them all the time turning up them beers while driving & the best of all is when you see them pull up to a store to buy beer,Then clean there cars out from all the empty bottles,& beer cans before they leave the store in there trash cans........

I believe liberals and conservatives alike will agree this is just one of the many problems we have in our society . Maybe if we could stop bad mouthing people over every little thing and discuss thing like adults we might find some solutions .

tnlonestar, we don't have to "choose" between DUI crimes and gun control. Apples and oranges, dude. Some of us are concerned about BOTH.

So, this guy can get parole in 4 years and his drivers license is suspended for 3 years. That means he will get out a be able to get drunk and kill somebody else in 4 years.

Look, until yall get all the facts about that night of the accident keep it zipped! I am so tired of people assuming that the paper is giving them all the right facts. There are also facts that the journalist didnt include as well. Yes he can get parole in 4 years blueraider1. As i said before get all the facts before you go inserting your foot into your mouth. Before everyone goes haywire wondering why i am butting in & going off, its because Steven is my cousin. He manned up, said he was wrong & made a big 360 in his life. Its sad both families have lost someone. I feel for the other family. It was tragic. Yes he shouldnt have been driving drunk & should have called someone to drive him home, but stuff happens. Everyone thats close to him knows this will hang over his head forever. I dont know...Judge Ash isnt fond of drunk drivers. Its unfortunate that this all happened. So, until everyone gets 100% of the facts, think before you speak, type or whichever.

You would think if you see someone cleaning out their car of beer bottles or whatever you would have enough brains to actually say something. If you see these things happening...you are only contributing to the problem.
