Drivers should watch out for children, buses

TMP Reports

Drivers are asked to be more cautious about children walking to school or getting on school buses in neighborhoods when school starts next week.

The speed limit is 15 mph in school zones, said Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans.

“Remember, it is against the law to pass a school bus when stopped and the red lights are flashing,” Evans said. “The only exception is on a divided four-lane highway with a traffic barrier.”

Parents who are dropping their children off at school are asked to leave home earlier to allow extra time for the increased traffic.

“Also, pay attention to the directions of school patrol officers and concentrate on driving when you’re in a school zone,” Evans said.

School patrol officers will be on duty both before and after school at city schools and county schools located within the city.

“Police officers will be present throughout the different school zones to check for speeding/seat belt usage,” Evans said. “The safety of the children is a priority.”
