A 26-year-old Jackson motorist suffered critical injuries when ejected from his Jeep Cherokee overturning about 12:50 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 24 near Smyrna, a state trooper said.

His name is not being released yet until next-of-kin is notified, said Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Justin Boyd.

The driver was driving westbound toward Nashville between the Almaville and Sam Ridley Parkway exits.

Witnesses told Boyd the driver drove up on traffic and swerved to miss a vehicle in front of him.

“When he swerved, the vehicle started flipping,” Boyd said. “It appears right now he just lost control of the vehicle.”

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected onto the interstate when the Jeep flipped over. Wearing a seat belt would have kept him inside the vehicle where the passenger compartment remained mostly intact. He was alone.

Paramedics took the driver to StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna where LifeFlight helicopter flew him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His condition is unavailable.

Boyd listed failure to maintain the proper lane and overcorrecting as contributing factors in the crash.
