Driver indicted in hit-and-run death of pedestrian

Grand jurors indicted a driver for criminal negligent homicide in the death of a man in May 2007.

Driver Allen Harris, 31, was accused of striking and killing pedestrian Roquine Avent, 24, of Settlers Drive May 21, 2007 on State Street, Murfreesboro Police Officer Drew Darnall reported.

Grand jurors also indicted Harris on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license.

In another case, defendant Alonzo Gayden of 911 Berry Place was charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault of Schemagner Hicks.

Gayden’s arrest warrant accused him of grabbing Hicks and choking her until she blacked out. She was found semi-conscious and taken to the emergency room. He remains jailed.

An unrelated set of indictments charged Willie Lee Simmons, 32, of Cheryl Lane in La Vergne with four counts of child rape.

Simmons was accused of raping a girl under age 13, stated a warrant obtained by Smyrna Police Detective Connie Pegram.

The defendants were among 121 cases indicted by the grand jury during its October session. Defendants listed above and below will receive copies of their indictments Monday from Circuit Court Judge David Bragg on the fourth floor of the Judicial Building.

In another case, Michael Mason, 23, of Covington, Tenn., was charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Mason allegedly abducted and assaulted ex-girlfriend Stephanie Lawrence April 13 from her Imperial Gardens home, Smyrna Police Officer Alyssa Costa reported in the arrest warrant. Lawrence jumped from the moving vehicle and escaped.

Another set of indictments charged Monquell Mosby, 31, of 1707 Craig St. with aggravated cruelty to animals and domestic assault.

His arrest warrant accused him of kicking the family cat in the face with his steel toes, injuring the cat, and hitting his girlfriend, Heather Gibson. Her 12-year-old son tried to stop him.

In an unrelated case, Derris Woods, 33, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a weapon.

Woods was accused in an arrest warrant of grabbing an ax and threatening his girlfriend and her two children, causing them to fear for their safety.
