The United Way has come up with an easy way to Live United or at least Drive United.
Featuring the United Way’s logo and trademark “Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United,” Tennessee became last year the first state to offer a United Way specialty plate to all state residents.
“Buying a United Way license plate will help the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties because approximately 50 percent of the funds raised (about $15) will be allocated back to the 39 United Ways of Tennessee to assist with support and training,” explained Meagan Flippin, director of Marketing and Special Events for the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.
After the cost of the plate is deducted, the remaining funds are distributed among three areas: approximately 50 percent will benefit the 39 United Ways across the state of Tennessee to assist with support and training, about 40 percent will benefit the Tennessee Arts Commission and 10 percent will be designated for the highway fund.
Flippin said the local organization’s overhead is only 11 percent and the extra money raised by the specialty plate will be used for training.
But before the plate can be produced, 1,000 Tennesseans must register for it. With only 100 registered so far, more are needed before the deadline of July 16, Flippin said.

Since 1956, the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties has worked to improve the community by supporting 45 partner agencies that focus on four key areas – education, health, income and rebuilding lives.
In 2008 the United Way provided services to almost 93,000 people in Rutherford and Cannon counties through partner agencies and its own initiatives.
