Dr. Kestner: Healthy dining choices in Murfreesboro Asian restaurants

Many readers are trying to make better food choices when dining out. I have some healthy suggestions for you that may introduce you to some new tastes as well as reduce your waist line.

There are a number of Asian restaurants in Murfreesboro that offer a selection of very healthy choices for dining out. The dishes are made from fresh natural ingredients, using a variety of herbs and spices to produce tremendously flavorful creations. The tastes are unique and distinctly different from Americanized dishes at typical Chinese restaurants. Many menu selections have less fat, cholesterol, and sodium and more nutrients because they rely on savory fresh ingredients.

My first recommendation is a restaurant that is well known to many readers, but may be new to you. Bangkok Thai Cuisine on Robert Rose Drive has been a favorite for two decades. Owner Bubpha (“boo-pa”) delights diners by preparing exceptional meals while she and husband Jack treat everyone like family. Having been in the kitchen on more than one occasion, I can tell you that the food is made with only freshly prepared ingredients in an immaculate facility.

Bubpha’s unique cooking style has made devotees of most people that try her food. I recommend a delicious noodle dish called phad thai, but you can choose from dozens of other options. If you prefer a milder or spicier taste, just let the server know and it will be prepared to your preference. Likewise, if you are new to these menu items, ask questions and the server will make recommendations. A new wine menu is extensive.

Another local favorite is Fuji Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi on Northfield Boulevard. Owners Chris and Hannah have recently completely renovated Fuji. The result is a beautifully designed open dinning room with about a dozen separate teppanyaki grills. For the uninitiated, your party will be seated at a grill where a chef will prepare your meal right in front of you. In addition to delicious food, the chef will deliver some spectacularly fiery theatrics. In addition to excellent sushi, steaks and chicken, healthy salmon and vegetarian selections are available.

Chris and Hannah also own Golden Eagle Mongolian Stir-Fry on Thompson Lane. Here, you choose exactly what goes into your dish in the same manner you would stack your plate at a salad bar. After you have chosen your own fresh ingredients, you hand it over to a grill specialist that prepares it for you. The result is a quick, freshly prepared meal that contains the exact ingredients you select. This restaurant is growing in popularity with people that are on the go but still want a healthy, flavorful hot meal.

Visit Sakura Japanese Restaurant on Broad Street and you will likely be greeted by either James or Pan (“pahn”), the owners. Sakura offers traditional sushi menus, Japanese dishes such as Bento boxes as well as some Korean favorites. This is some of the best sushi I have ever tried. Ask sushi chef Joe about the Yum Yum or the Murfreesboro roll. If you want to try a new taste that is likely to become your favorite, ask for bulgogi. This traditional Korean beef dish is served on a searing hot stone. The taste is incredible. The meat has been marinated so it is exceptionally tender.

I saved my newest favorite for last. At Thai Spice on Rutherford Boulevard near MTSU, owners Nick and Mo will greet you warmly and make sure that every taste is to your liking. Try the satay kai, phad kee mao or anything else on the menu; you will be pleased. Although new to the Murfreesboro dining scene, this is some of the best food in town. Using fresh ingredients such as holy basil, galangal (ginger), lemongrass, prik (Thai peppers), curry and coconut milk Mo creates exceptional memorable dishes. I guarantee your first visit will not be your last.

These are all great places to meet with friends. Try them all. I’m sure there are other places I have not yet tried or failed to mention. If you have suggestions, please post them so others can try your favorite healthy eatery.

Beware the MSG! Asian restaurants are heavy users of MSG (SALT). Pei Wei advertises they don't add any, not so sure of the others. My heart doctors tell me NO ASIAN FOOD! I think the worst thing about the MSG is they use lower qualtiy product and enhance it with the salt. YUCK! A double whammy!

Trvlace,

You bring up a great point regarding MSG. However, the idea that MSG is an Asian or Chinese restaurant problem is an outdated stereotype. Unfortunately, there are just as many “American” restaurants that serve food loaded with MSG as any other type. This is especially true of many fast food places.

In fact, MSG is often “hidden” in many foods that you may purchase in the supermarket. MSG is called several other names and is a prominent ingredient in many food additives. Many foods that popular sit-down restaurants pull out of their freezer have abundant MSG. Even restaurants that declare “No MSG used in preparation of our food” are somewhat misleading, since the foods that are being prepared are often not free from MSG. The fact that they are not adding it on site does not account for the ingredients already present in the foods.

Many typical Chinese restaurants still use MSG as an additive unless a customer requests that it be left out. In restaurants such as the ones listed in this article, where many of the ingredients are fresh to begin with, MSG may not be already present in the food. Since you have been told to avoid Asian restaurants altogether, I’m guessing that you have not tried the ones highlighted in this article. I would encourage you to try them and ask about their use of MSG. Many contemporary Asian restaurants do not use it at all, and those that do will often be happy to comply with a diner’s request to avoid it. Because of this, it may actually be easier to avoid MSG in Asian restaurants that prepare fresh ingredients than in other restaurants where it is hidden in the pre-seasoned entrees. If you are avoiding sodium, however, be very stingy with the teriyaki and soy sauce.

I’m glad you brought this subject up, and I will provide a more comprehensive and revealing explanation in a future article. Readers will likely be surprised when they discover all the popular restaurants that depend on MSG for flavor. For now, just be aware that you and I are likely eating MSG every day.

I have tried the above restaurants, and the food is very good at these places.

My only complaint is smelling so strongly of the cooked food when I eat at the Golden Eagle Mongolian Restaurant on Thompson Lane. Wish they would do something more with their ventilation system. I always have to make sure I am going home right after as it's kind of embarassing to be walking around smelling like fried food!

I'd love to see anyone show me some healthy dining out choices as they are very few in numbers. To help out here is a site.

The following is a site that has each listed restaurants nutritional informaion. However some don't list sodium content. Use your best judgement to avoid high sodium dishes.

What I have found is that only large national chains can afford the testing required to have a nutritional chart. Most of which serve huge over portioned dishes which are high in sodium. Avoid them.

Noppakao on Rutherford Blvd. in a strip center behind Mellow Mushroom has the best Thai in the 'Boro in my opinion. They definitely do not use msg. My wife is very sensitive to it and she has never had a problem with the food there. They state no msg on the menu.
It is very authentic for this area and the place is squeaky clean.

Bulpha is proud to say she never uses MSG in her food and I can attest to that having eaten her food since before the restuarant was ever openned. I am very sensitive to MSG. Bangkok is the very best!!!!

I have eaten at all of the restaurants mentioned in this article. I am sensitive to MSG but have never had any problem at any of these places. The food is very different from ordinary Chinese restaurants! I am glad that Murfreesboro now has so many diverse restaurants. Bangkok is an old favorite but I also liked Thai Spice. They have some very good dishes that I had never tried. I don’t believe they use any MSG either. I have tried several sushi rolls at Sakura and Yum Yum is my favorite, too. I really like the scallops at Fuji

Sushin which is next to Play it Again Sports on Thompson Lane has the best/freshest sushi in town. I have taken many of my Japanese friends there and they agree that it is the best in Murfreesboro. No MSG wories with sushi.

The new Chinese place, MayFlower is the best I have found here in the Boro. It is on the corner of Cason Lane and New Salem Hwy. The food is very fresh, wonderful take-out or eat-in. The family who runs it just moved here from Brooklyn, New York, and is very authentic in my opinion. Anyone else eaten here?
