Downtown Christmas tree lighting Dec. 4

Annual Christmas tree lighting set for Dec. 4
Friday night, December 4th is the date to save as Santa arrives to light the official Rutherford County Christmas Tree at the annual Celebrate Christmas Downtown festivities. Lots of local talent will be on-hand to usher in the 2009 Christmas season as everyone gathers around the historic Rutherford County Courthouse.

The Puppets of Praise from First Baptist Church begins at 5:30 with a special pre-show performance; followed by the main stage program which begins crisply at 6 p.m. Performers on the main stage will include Bradley School of the Arts orchestra, Siegel Middle School choir, Baker Performance Academy dancers, Brooke Arrington, North Boulevard Church a cappella choir, Homer Pittard Campus School choir, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church choir and Oakland High School Choir. Of course, Santa will arrive to light the official Rutherford County Christmas tree, and will be available for photographs inside the Courthouse following the event.

This holiday season free horse-drawn carriage rides through Historic Downtown Murfreesboro will be available each Friday leading up to Christmas, thanks to downtown businesses; The Write Impression, Trendy Pieces, Shacklett’s Photography, The Vine, Carriage Lane Inn, and Marina’s Italian Restaurant on the Square. The carriage will operate from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 18.

On the night of the Annual Community Tree Lighting Celebration, free carriage rides will be available from 7-10 p.m. courtesy of Celebrate Christmas Downtown sponsor Fifth Third Bank.

In addition to this night of photographs with Santa; the following Saturday and each weekend before Christmas Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in the Historic County Courthouse. Be sure to bring your own camera, as professional photography will only be available in the Courthouse during the weekend of December 18th and 19th. Friday hours are 6:00 – 9:00 PM and Saturday hours 12:00 – 4:00 PM.

WGNS Blanket Brigade is part of this year’s Celebrate Christmas Downtown. For the past 12 years, during cold weather months WGNS has collected NEW blankets to give to local homeless persons here in Murfreesboro. The reason we stress "new blankets" is strictly for health reasons. The WGNS truck will be parked in front of BIG B CLEANERS on the south side of the Square Friday night December 4th and the public is encouraged to fill the back of the truck with new blankets for local homeless persons. The WGNS Good Neighbor Network is FM 100.5; FM 101.9; AM 1450; over-the-air TV channel 11; and worldwide on the internet at www.WGNSradio.com

For more information on Celebrate Christmas Downtown, Santa’s Courthouse hours, the free holiday carriage rides, and the weekly drawings please contact Main Street at 615.895.1887.

"Bradley School for the Arts Orchestra" will actually be members from the 6th grade concert band.

Thanks for the invitation to perform! The students are excited to be apart of this great event.
