General Mills will hold the Doughboy Challenge, a 5k run and one-mile fun walk, Sept. 19 at the Gateway Island Park in Murfreesboro.

This year’s event will benefit three local charities in the Murfreesboro area. Books from Birth, Room in the Inn and the Boys & Girls Club of Rutherford County will receive 100 percent of the profits raised by the event.

“The original event began in 1998 and ran for three years. Once General Mills purchased Pillsbury, the benefits did not begin again until 2005. This is our fourth year in a row and the first time the benefit will be held at the Gateway Park,” said director of the Doughboy Challenge, George Spence.

The race route has been mapped and certified with water and snack stations to be set up along the course.

Pillsbury memorabilia will be for sale with all funds going to the charities. General Mills will pay for all expenses to hold the event.

Spectators are welcome to come support runners, snack on Pillsbury samples and meet the Pillsbury Doughboy.

“Over the last few years, we have geared more toward the community, more family-oriented like General Mills,” said Spence.

With last year’s benefit being a big success, the goal for this year is $30,000.

“It’s a great way to support your local charities. It’s going to be a great event with a lot of fun,” Spence said.

Registration fees are $25 for runners and $10 for walkers with the prices raised the day of the event.
