DOSS O’NEAL, JR., age 86, of Smyrna, died Monday, November 16, 2009, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Dorothy Jo Adamson O’Neal who died in 2006, his son Michael, his parents, Doss Sr. and Vester O’Neal, infant sister Ruby and brothers Fred and Lacy.

Visitation will be 4:00PM to 8:00PM Wednesday at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna, with funeral service at 7:00PM Thursday at Highland Heights Church of Christ. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be Friday 10:30AM at Mapleview Cemetery.

He is survived by his daughter Peggy O’Neal Peden of Nashville; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Wendy O’Neal of Smyrna; grandsons, Shawn O’Neal, Brandon (Lindy) O’Neal, David Peden, Evan O’Neal, Nathaniel O’Neal, and Colin O’Neal; one great-grandson, Aidan Michael O’Neal.

Mr. O’Neal was a charter member and former elder of Highland Heights Church of Christ and a retired Educator. He taught at John Colemon School and was principal at Jefferson School (where he also coached) and John Colemon before moving to Metro Nashville Schools, teaching at McMurray, Rose Park and Pearl-Cohn. He loved music, fishing, gardening and woodworking.

He attended Smyrna High School and David Lipscomb College and received B.S. and M.A. degrees from MTSU. He served in WWII in the US Army, 5th Infantry Division, as well as in the Korean War and the Tennessee Air National Guard. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Smyrna Fire Department and the town’s first walking letter carrier. He was also a dozier operator with Oman Construction Company.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and David Reed, Fred Rogers, Paul Agee, Ronnie O’Neal, Ricky O’Neal. Honorary pallbearers will be elders of Highland Heights Church of Christ, Edwin Bell, Dr. Joshua McCollum, Kelly Soriano, Laurie Stevens, life-long friend Gladys Elizabeth Gooch.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Fund or the charity of your choice.
