Smyrna High School sophomore Jonathon Campbell, right, displays the thumb band, “Dnt txt n drv” donated by Dave Gober of First Community Mortgage Inc.
Smyrna High School sophomore Jonathon Campbell doesn’t drive yet but he’s wearing a glow-in-the dark thumb band proclaiming, “Dnt txt n drv” or don’t text and drive.

Campbell, 15, sometimes rides with friends who do drive.

“I do have a big problem with them texting and driving,” said Campbell.

Campbell received the thumb band last week during a school criminal justice class from Dave Gober of First Community Mortgage Inc., who paid for the thumb bands with Realtor Shauna Mason of Keller Williams.

Gober distributed the thumb bands to Smyrna High students during teacher John LaFevor’s class where School Resource Officers Dustin Cox and Angela Hall allowed students to wear goggles simulating what it’s like to drive drunk. They drove an SRO golf cart through cones set up outside the high school.

Cox said he would speak to students about driving and texting before the prom.

“I love the idea,” Cox said.

Hall said when students start driving, texting becomes an issue.

Gober, who has four children of his own, said students can wear the thumb band as a reminder when they drive or hang the thumb band from the rear view mirror of the vehicle as a reminder.

“It will save somebody’s life,” Gober believes.

Gober and Mason intend to distribute more thumb bands to high school students during the next few weeks.

For more information, call Gober at 896-4141 or Mason at 895-8000.

I think that the thumb bands are a good idea; however it is not going to stop people from texting and driving. For one, people proclaim that texting and driving is dangerous, and that they will not engage in it, yet they do. I am one of those people. I think texting and driving is very dangerous and can result in fatal accidents, but I sometimes feel invincible to the situation. Secondly, people will support the thumb bands, purchase them, and wear them, yet still text and drive. This is a good start, but it’s going to take a lot more to stop people from texting and driving. It is against the law, yet people still do it. People are dying from it, yet people still do it. It’s posted on billboards and signs on highways, interstates, and streets, yet people still do it. I’m not saying the thumb bands won’t work or change this matter at all, but I am saying that it needs to be stressed in a serious manner. Maybe citizens getting together and supporting these thumb bands will be the change we want to see. I will purchase one, and when I’m driving it will remind me to do just what it says. Don’t text and drive!

First, I am a student from MTSU and this is an assignment. I believe the thumb band could prove effective. I feel it would be more effective if students really drivers in general understood the how dangerous it really is. I remember a recent ad campaign from AT&T in which a message such as “yes” was on the screen, and later it would say this was the last thing 'so – and – so' read. The slogan was “it can wait.” At 55 mph the car moves about 60 feet in three-quarters of a second. Even if the driver is good at multitasking their attention is not focused on the road and in that two – three seconds it takes to finish replying so much can happen. If it is necessary to reply, just call them back. At least then a driver can have his or her eyes on the road. When someone drives irresponsibly, they are not putting only themselves at risk, but everyone else who is driving also. The thumb bands do make a good reminder to wait – at least – until the car is not moving, and I do believe that they will save lives. However, awareness of the serious danger of this irresponsible action should be addressed fully.
