State Rep. John Hood (D-Murfreesboro) is making the best of his time at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

“I’m just trying to develop friendships and relationships to help MTSU,” Hood said.

In his time out in Denver, Hood has talked the president of AT&T into attending an MTSU football game and is working to get other corporate bigwigs to come to town.

Hood is stepping down from his General Assembly seat in November and taking a job with MTSU’s Office of Community Engagement and Support, where he will champion the university’s needs and community impact.

So he talks up the university and the town to everyone he meets.

Hood said he met a man from Provo, Utah and when he identified himself as a Tennessean, the man asked if he is a UT fan. Hood responed he supports the Blue Raiders, more than the Big Orange.

“And he said that’s the university with the great women’s basketball team …” Hood said. “Those are the things I enjoy, meeting people and finding out their stories like that.”

As for the convention itself, Hood was very impressed by the speech given by Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana.

“I thought the governor of Montana was phenomenal,” Hood said. “He was one of the highlights of the night.”

Hood was also taken aback by the speech given by Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

“He was one of the early speakers. He was dynamic. He had the crowd going,” Hood said, adding Kucinich spoke about progressive politics like universal healthcare and giving tax breaks to the middle class.

The evening’s headliner, Hillary Clinton, spoke along the same line and stressed party unity, to try and pull her supporters back under the big tent of the Democratic party.

Clinton stressed her support of the party’s presumptive nominee Barack Obama.

“Like she said it’s time to move on,” Hood said.

Tomorrow, Hood will give his reactions to Day 3 of the convention and featured speakers former President Bill Clinton and presumptive Vice Presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).
