| The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County and the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area invite the public to attend the final springtime Community Heritage Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23.
“Traveling the Dixie Highway in Rutherford County” is the focus of the free lecture, which features Megan Akerstrom, an MTSU master’s candidate in public history. Akerstrom will speak about the history of the Dixie Highway system, its impact on Rutherford County and the highway remnants that can still be seen today.
Sponsored by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, which is a partnership unit of the National Park Service, the upcoming lecture will be held at the Heritage Center, just off the square at 225 West College St.
The center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding major holidays, and features guided walking tours of the town square on the hour. Group tours are available Monday through Saturday by advance reservations. Admission is always free.
The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County is a joint venture between the TCWNHA, Main Street: Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, the City of Murfreesboro and the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU. Additional support comes from the Rutherford County government and State Farm Insurance.
