Destination Rutherford, an economic development initiative for Rutherford County, announced Tuesday it endorses the proposed Bible Park USA project currently being considered by the Rutherford County Commission and several of its committees.
According to Bill Jones, chairman of Destination Rutherford, the project meets many of the objectives of Destination Rutherford. He noted the importance of business development and attraction, tourism, job creation and the diversification of the local economy to Rutherford County and its economic base.
“We endorse the continued informational processes currently underway through the Commission and its committees and encourage the County Commission to vote in favor of the economic diversification and substantial new revenues this project will create for Rutherford County,” Jones said. |

To me, the idea of a theme park is the poster boy of failure for Destination Rutherford. After all the hoopla attached to the potential for the Medical Center Parkway becoming a mecca for corporations with higher paying jobs and all they can come up with is that? Why waste tax incentives on a dog and pony show whose success is based on a very questionable attendance number? If this park is built you can forget ever getting any corporate headquarters to locate here. It is as logical as sticking a trailer park next to the Avenues Center so people can walk to do their shopping. To me a theme park adds about as much class to an area as an Orlando trailer park.

What a shock. All the hoteliers, restauranteurs and other parasites see an opportunity to reel in some bumpkins using our tax money as bait.

Good point Bota.... we will now be known as Murfreesboro Tennessee "Bible City USA", try selling that to your Board of Directors when trying to determine where to locate your next corporate office. Our leaders are jumping the gun on this, this could turn out to be a huge embarassment for our comunity. "Welcome to Bible Town, Y'all"
Ouch Destination Rutherford...Ouch!

thinkingman.
Your statement "hotelier, restauranteur and other parasites" is absolutely outrageous and inappropriate.
It hardly reflects any "thinking."
I recogize this is an emotional issue for many, but that in no way justifies blindly striking out and any target.

Mike,
I challenge you to tell me what motivation other than pure professional greed has motivated these people to support this park and I'll take it back. Until then, shut up and sit down.

thinkingman?
Earning an honest living does not make one a parasite. Wanting to see business increase does not equate to greed.
Again, emotion over thinking.
Telling people to "shut up" is disrespectful and certainly in this context rude.

How about caring about what is good for the community as a whole?
How about wanting to know how many millions of dollars this New Yorker wants from us before he divulges any details?
How about keeping our powder dry and waiting for a legitimate business idea to come along? One that offers jobs that pay more than $10 an hour without insurance?
Just falling all over a trojan horse just because it's pretty is sheer stupidity. Sorry if I can't hide my contempt any better & it hurt your feelings.

OK,
Those could certainly be, and some are definitely, issues to be discussed.
The hoteliers, etc., have interests just as you and others do and have a right to express them without being insulted.
That was my point.
And, don't worry about hurting my feelings. A few decades in this business makes that pretty hard.
I would just like to see more respect for others, their viewpoints and general civility in public debate.

thinkingman and mike, you're arguing the same point here.
It would make sense if your business is based on revenue brought in from people that aren't locals then of course you would want to have something like this "bible park" and other "attractions" to draw in the dollar.
That said, bota and soon2b6 both make perfectly logical arguments for the long term. I wouldn't want to be associated with BIBLE CITY USA in a business setting. Or a personal one for that matter. It would be an embarrassment to have a bible park in my city.

Glad you boys got that all worked out, now back to my point.... we are already recognized as being in the heart of the Bible belt..... do we really want our mantra to be "Bible Park City USA"? Is this where we all thought we would end up in our quest for success and growth? Did "Destination Rutherford" start it's mutli-million dollar fundraising effort to
have us become this strange "Destination"?
Do we really need this... obviuosly this WILL change our "landscape" and I mean much more than the inconveniences of the Blackman folks.... this will change MURFREESBORO! If this "ain't done right" it will be a blasphomous nightmare for years to come! If it is done right ..... we are now "Bible Park City USA".... do we want that??? If so, I say vote for the Bible Park which will museum all of the various religions in our culture and create new possible choices for us and our children. We need new choices.... don't we? I think our leaders are jumping the gun on this euphoric touristic idea of easy money from some fast talking New Yorkers. Good Luck y'all.

I have read this board with great interest since I am involved with providing health care for many of the "working poor" of our community. It seems that the two major issues here are:
1. What do we want the national/public perception of Rutherford County to be?
2. What will this perception do to our county's ability to create higher paying, benefit-providing quality jobs that will attract corporations (who often have ethnic & cultural diversity among their executives & employees), as well as provide employment opportunities for our younger University graduates? Does a bright, well-educated MTSU grad want to stay here and work at the Bible Park or a quality business such as biotech, science, or research facility?
While it is only my opinion, I do not support the use of public tax dollars for employers who do not provide high wages and full benefits for ALL employees. If our community gives incentives for the creation of these low-paying jobs, then we are asking our medical community (and charitable persons) to shoulder the burden of the working uninsured's health care, the education system by paying adults lower wages, making it difficult to afford school supplies, field trips, etc., and almost every other portion of community infrastructure.
I am neither for or against this project yet until I hear the answers to the wage structure, benefits offered, and employment plan (how many part-time/ full-time). I think that we should hold onto our valuable resources (land & tax incentives) until a high-quality, growth-oriented company chooses to relocate here. Then we should reward this company for what it brings to our community and our future. Murfreesboro is a wonderful place to live and our residents are giving, welcoming people. Our community's riches should only go to those who truly enrich our community. Thank you for the opportunity to discuss and raise awareness.

I would really like to see just how much support Muhammad-Land or Yahwehville would get... There would be people marching in the street in opposition...

I do not believe it matters a heck of alot if the Chamber of Commerce, Destination Rutherford, the restaurant owners, hotel owners or Rutherford Tourism supports this project.
The real people who are important here are the members of the Rutherford County Planning Commission. They are the ones that will ask the pertinent questions of Bar Tur and they will not approve the development unless they are completely sure all the questions have been answered. I have faith they will be asking alot more questions than have been asked so far.
The proof is on the developer, Bar Tur, to convince the commission this is a viable project. He, so far, has not convinced the IDB nor the Future Development Committee it is viable and will work. Believe he will have a really hard time convncing the commission, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the project is sound.

Actually, it did pass the Industrial Development Board. Please read ALERT: Bible Park clears first hurdle at murfreesboropost.com/news.php?viewStory=10214 or Bible Park call moves to Planning Commission at murfreesboropost.com/news.php?viewStory=10239.
Thank you.

I wonder how many people would actually be for the Bible Park if it's next door to their house with all the extra noise and traffic where they live? I bet those people that are for this would change their minds if it was going to be next door to them.
