Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, who is running for re-election, is leading Democratic state Sen. Eric Stewart in Rutherford County for the 4th Congressional District race.
With 36 of the 46 Rutherford County precincts counted, DesJarlais has garnered 53 percent of the vote.
Election officials are still counting the remaining 10 precincts in Rutherford County.
Stewart is trailing with 47 percent of the vote, according to preliminary numbers released just before midnight by the Rutherford County Election Commission.
According to state population data, Rutherford County comprises 37 percent of the newly redrawn 4th District, a 5 percent increase compared with the current demographics of the 6th District.
In light of voting results from the other counties that make up the 4th District, DesJarlais has already been dubbed the likely winner.
Due to counting issues in Rutherford County earlier in the evening, results are just now being released.
