One Rutherford County man suffered gunshot wounds after being accused of pointing a shotgun at sheriff’s deputies about 4 a.m. Tuesday on Lindsey Lane, Sheriff Robert Arnold said.

The man was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Arnold placed the deputy on routine administrative leave with pay while the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducts the probe of the shooting.

Names of the man and the deputy are not being released yet because the investigation is in the early stages.

Several deputies responded to a call at the home where they found the man ranting and raving. They tried to establish a rapport with the man. He approached deputies with a shotgun in his hand. They ordered him to drop the shotgun.

One deputy fired at the man, wounding him, the sheriff said. Deputies immediately called for paramedics who treated the man and transported him to Vanderbilt.

More information will be released during a press conference with Sheriff Arnold at 1 p.m. today at the sheriff’s office at 940 New Salem Highway.
