Deputy inhales cocaine during arrest

TMP Reports

A sheriff’s deputy who inhaled cocaine while trying to apprehend a suspect was treated Wednesday at Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

Deputy Nigel Kapadia was evaluated and released.

Kapadia was patrolling about 5:10 p.m. when he saw a Ford Explorer run off Baker Road near Shirley Road. When he stopped to check, driver Jamari Grey ran to a wooded area. After a foot pursuit, Kapadia captured Grey who kept trying to grab his pants. Believing Grey could have reached for a weapon, the deputy grabbed his left hand.

Grey jumped to his feet carrying a clear baggy filled with a white substance. The deputy grabbed Grey and took him to the ground.

“As we were going down to the ground, Mr. Grey threw the baggy down to the ground which in turn caused it to burst, making a cloud of white powder, which I inhaled,” Kapadia reported.

The deputy arrested Grey, charging him with leaving the scene of an accident, evading arrest, resisting arrest, felony possession of cocaine, tampering with evidence, assault, DUI (second offense) and driving on a suspended license.

Because of the amount of cocaine involved, the Narcotics unit responded.

Detective Lt. Egon Grissom said narcotics detectives seized Grey’s Explorer and $1,100 cash used for transporting cocaine.

Grey, 27, of Campbellwood Circle, was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. A hearing on the charges is set March 29 in General Sessions Court.
