A sheriff’s deputy who inhaled cocaine while trying to apprehend a suspect was treated Wednesday at Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

Deputy Nigel Kapadia was evaluated and released.

Kapadia was patrolling about 5:10 p.m. when he saw a Ford Explorer run off Baker Road near Shirley Road. When he stopped to check, driver Jamari Grey ran to a wooded area. After a foot pursuit, Kapadia captured Grey who kept trying to grab his pants. Believing Grey could have reached for a weapon, the deputy grabbed his left hand.

Grey jumped to his feet carrying a clear baggy filled with a white substance. The deputy grabbed Grey and took him to the ground.

“As we were going down to the ground, Mr. Grey threw the baggy down to the ground which in turn caused it to burst, making a cloud of white powder, which I inhaled,” Kapadia reported.

The deputy arrested Grey, charging him with leaving the scene of an accident, evading arrest, resisting arrest, felony possession of cocaine, tampering with evidence, assault, DUI (second offense) and driving on a suspended license.

Because of the amount of cocaine involved, the Narcotics unit responded.

Detective Lt. Egon Grissom said narcotics detectives seized Grey’s Explorer and $1,100 cash used for transporting cocaine.

Grey, 27, of Campbellwood Circle, was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. A hearing on the charges is set March 29 in General Sessions Court.

Glad to finally know what happened since I was one of many stuck in the traffic going towards Old Nashville Hwy on Baker Rd. Our finest had one lane closed and I'm guessing that none of the police officer's that were in the 10-15 patrol cars I seen know how to direct traffic.

I believe that is the first time I have eaver heard a story of an "accidental" snort of cocaine.

Have to agree with mommy, traffic direction around an accident/incident scene is most certainly not a strong suit of local law enforcement.

"ACCIDENTAL", seems to just be in keeping with the general ineptitude of the pole-ice ossifers that we have to deal with in Murfreesboro and Rutherford CO. Is the high-sheriff’s son still working at RCSD?

Well lets not say anything bad about this durg dealer who's out there selling drugs to your kids. Lets just put down the police for doing their job. You people beat everything, you know that.

Maybe those that have issues with law enforcement in our area should make a career change and show us how police officers should behave. I would gladly sit in traffic for any length of time if it meant that one more criminal would be off the streets and away from my family. Thank you Deputy Kapadia for your service and to the "10-15" other patrols units who answered the call of duty.

thank you Deputy Kapadia for risking your life to get another low-life off the streets. Also, thank you to the 10-15 patrol cars that responded to help you out while you were trying to apprehend Mr. Grey because i'm sure none of the people who were in traffic on Old Nashville Hwy and posting on here would have gotten out to help. Thank you RCSO, Dep. Kapadia, and the other officers who responded. Not everyone in this county hates you. Thank you for your service!

Thanks Truth and PhilsGirl and to the RCSO and other officers who put their life on the line everyday.

I've lived all over the world, and we, Rutherford County, have the best, most honest law enforcement I've experienced....wish the whiners had to put their butts on the life and death line a few times...thanks law enforcement guys and gals...

shame on those of you who think this is funny, shame on those who judge our law enforcement, this deputy could have died and your having a laugh....shame on you

When I lived in TX, a lot of the p.o.'s were thugs - I feel a lot safer with the law enforcement people here.

I wonder if this is the transvestite who got busted with cocaine?

My dealings with MPD and the RCSD have always been "Totally Professional".
I've dealt with law enforcement all over the lower 48, and our folks do pretty well.

Since it took the 10-15 patrol cars full of officers to do this job then maybe they should have had a 16th car there for directing traffic!

PhilsGirl- Most of the ones complaining here don't have the balls to do for one day what our law officers do EVERY day to keep us safe. Thank you from me too, Deputy Kapadia, and to all other officers involved. Great job!!!

By: murfreesboromommy on 1/29/10
For all of you who think that I'm "complaining"...I do know what they do and don't do because I had to hear about it everyday from my ex-husband that is a cop here...

By: sja66 on 1/29/10
Mommy, you are complaining. Thanks Deputy Kapadia.

I agree, no wonder he is not married to you anymore. With that said I am sorry for the comment but, it is an exampleof your blogs. Have a good weekend and be a little more open minded please.

LoL!

Wow, I would hate to be a police officer here. No matter what they do, there is always someone to complain about it. I was a Military Police office for a while and I understand what our local office face everyday. Thanks Officer Kapadia for a job well done. Some other officer might have just let this drug dealer go!! What would you have said about that "mommy"???

By: murfreesboromommy on 2/1/10
vdanr...I wasn't laughing at what happened to Officer Kapadia. I was laughing at truthandjustice1's comment.

Murfreesboromommy You don't like police period from how it sounds on alot of your post reactions. Just because you were married to a police officer and now divorced, doesn't mean lets play hate police and talk negative about them on every murfreesboro website! And if you do next time you need help call a crackhead! If it was that important to you to get traffic moving when a criminal was being taken in,get your butt out there and get it moving! Thanks Officer Kapadia
