One fugitive accused of beating his girlfriend and a suspected intoxicated driver were stopped after separate pursuits Tuesday with sheriff’s deputies.
Fugitive Charles Kenneth Irish, 30, of Crickett Lane was pursued from Leanna-Central Valley Road to Crossroads Market on U.S. Highway 231 North (Lebanon Highway) in Walter Hill, Cpl. Ryan Huggins reported. Irish turned into the market where his “vehicle began to fishtail before sliding to a stop while customers were pumping gas.”
Huggins found Irish’s girlfriend, Jamy Barrett, inside the truck with blood on her skin and clothes. While paramedics examined her, Barrett told Huggins Irish hit her in the head with a beer bottle Tuesday morning at Scottish Inn, then made her get into the truck against her will.
“Ms. Barrett asked Mr. Irish to let her out of the vehicle and Mr. Irish pulled a pocket knife out and opened the blade and told Ms. Barrett she was not going anywhere,” Huggins reported.
They drove to Murfreesboro Airport and the soccer fields nearby where he allegedly damaged the fields, the deputy reported.
Paramedics took Barrett to Middle Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. Deputies charged Irish with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic assault, felony evading arrest, DUI and driving on a revoked license.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Dan Goodwin reported Irish was wanted for an earlier domestic assault on Barrett. He was released from the state Department of Correction a couple of weeks ago. Since 1998, Irish as spent 2,411 days in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
The investigation began about 2:25 p.m. when Huggins stopped Irish, who was wanted on unrelated arrest warrants. When asked if he was Irish, he replied, “no,” and shook his head. He put the truck in drive and drove away.
“Irish then took off at a high rate of speed on Leanna-Central Valley Road,” Huggins reported.
Deputy Nathan Devers passed Huggins. Both deputies entered the pursuit.
“Irish continued driving at a high rate of speed with no care for the safety of the general public, his passenger, our patrol deputies or his self,” Huggins reported. “During the pursuit, Mr. Irish was unable to maintain a proper lane of travel, causing oncoming traffic to pull off the roadway, reached speeds of 65 mph, accelerated while entering sharp curves and failed to obey all traffic signs.”
Traffic on Central Valley Road stopped to avoid a crash. When Irish turned on Central Valley Road, Deputy Mellody Stephenson entered the pursuit. Cpl. Brandon Cisek deployed a spike strip on Central Valley Road and Jackson Trail, flattening two tires on the driver’s side of the truck.
“Irish continued to drive oncoming (traffic) off the roadway while he drove his vehicle with one hand and smoked a cigarette with the other hand,” Huggins reported.
When he turned into Crossroads Markets, he was driving on the rims.
Once taken into custody, Irish admitted drinking a few beers. He was placed in the patrol car where he fell asleep. He later awoke and agreed to give a sample of blood for a blood-alcohol test.
Detective Jim Tramel interviewed Barrett and questioned Irish before charging him with the kidnapping and domestic assault charges. Irish’s hearing is set Oct. 15 in General Sessions Court.
In an unrelated case, Deputy Gregg Speck was dispatched to a driver possibly videotaping while driving about 10:24 a.m. Tuesday on Old Nashville Highway.
Speck met the speeding truck near Stones River Battlefield, where the driver swerved, just missing Speck and other drivers.
The driver swerved over the center lines several times and traveled in and out of ditches, finally stopping, Speck reported.
Speck and Murfreesboro Police ordered the driver to exit but he didn’t respond. He appeared to be disoriented and shook.
Officers got driver Paul David Robbins Jr. out of the truck and called an ambulance. Paramedics treated him on the way to MTMC for an evaluation.
Speck reported he found prescription medicine inside the truck.
Charges are pending against Robbins.
