The NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff ruled yesterday, that MTSU senior quarterback Dwight Dasher is suspended four games and have to repay $1,500 in benefits before he can be ruled eligible to play.

However, Blue Raider Athletic Director Chris Massaro released a statement saying the university is appealing the decision hoping for a shorter suspension.

“Middle Tennessee State University respects the NCAAs decision, but we do plan to make a formal appeal,” MTSU Athletic Director Chris Massaro said. “The appeal process is already underway and we feel there is enough mitigation to warrant a three-game suspension.”

Massaro added that the university might know a decision by late next week. They have submitted the material to the NCAA and the organization will conduct a conference call on Thursday before they make their decision on the appeal.

Dasher spoke to the media for the first time since he was declared ineligible before the season starter. He released a statement and then he took questions.

“I want to apologize to Dr. McPhee, Mr. Massaro, my teammates, my coaches and the Blue Raider fans for my mistake in my judgment. I regret what I did for the embarrassment and distraction it has caused. I learned a valuable life lesson. I hope others can learn from my mistakes. I’m very appreative of the support that my teammates and coaches have given me during this time, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the field.”

Dasher said he needed the loans to help his family. “I tried to help the family, but I went about it the wrong way,” he added.

According to all sides, the loan has been repaid.

According to a press release by the NCAA, “The university declared the student-athlete ineligible for violations of NCAA preferential treatment rules. According to the facts of the case submitted by Middle Tennessee, the student-athlete received an impermissible loan from an individual in the community. Based on the information provided by the university, the student-athlete has repaid the loan.

“Our team has been very supportive of Dwight,” MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill said.

The Blue Raiders head to Memphis on Saturday, but Stockstill does not know who the starter will be. Sophomore Logan Kilgore, who started the opener, is not 100 percent because of an injury, according to him. Last week’s starter Jeff Murphy lead MTSU to a win over Austin Peay.

During the suspension, Dasher has been able to practice with the team. “It’s been kind of tough, but I’ve been trying to encourage the other quarterbacks,” Dasher said.
