Back by popular demand, MTSU holds the second annual CSI: MTSU.
CSI: MTSU is a three day program designed for students entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in Rutherford and surrounding counties from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. June 11-13 in MTSU’s Business and Aerospace Building.
The program is co-sponsored by the Forensic Institute for Research and Education (FIRE) and MTSU’s College of Continuing Education and Distance Learning.
The goals of CSI: MTSU are:
- To allow students entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades to explore many unique career possibilities in forensic science;
- To provide a “real life” reason to tackle higher level math and science courses;
- and to develop skills in team work, seeing and understanding details, critical thinking, and presentations.
The student investigators will be presented with a recreation of an actual crime scene. They will be divided into several teams and each team will be assigned to a member of the Forensic Anthropology Search and Recovery Team (a professional directs and coaches the students as they use math and science to solve the crime).
Each student is trained in the fundamental processes of collecting evidence including DNA, fingerprints, hair and fibers, simulated blood spatter, and shoe prints. Additionally, students will learn how to process the evidence, conduct interviews, and formulate theories while working within a team environment.
During the last afternoon of the camp each team present their theories of the crime and the conclusions that are reached, which will be critiqued by a panel of forensic scientists.
Parents are welcome to come to the last camp session.
The program costs $225.00 per student.
