Driving at speeds of 100 mph allowed a store burglary suspect to elude sheriff’s deputies early Friday, a deputy reported.

A witness told deputies a man driving a motorcycle broke into Gordon’s Market about 5 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 41 South (Manchester Highway), Deputy James Goney reported. The burglar stole about $500 cash, cigarettes and soup.

Lt. David Haley and Sgt. Kenneth Barrett caught up with the motorcyclist at the intersection of Southeast Broad Street and Rutherford Boulevard. Sgt. Chris Kauffman and Deputies Danny Poole and Matt Clagg tried to stop the suspect speeding on a “crotch rocket” sports bike.

Due to his excessive speed and reckless nature, supervisors stopped the pursuit after obtaining his license plate.

The motorcyclist was last seen speeding away about 100 mph on Broad Street, Goney reported.

People who have information about the suspect may call Detective Todd Sparks at 904-3047.

Maybe the M'boro officers that drive their "crotch rockets" like fools on all the country roads could be on the look out for this suspect.

Why do they need information if they have the license plate? Do they even know the color of the crotchrocket?

Had he been on a Harley, he would have got caught.

I am totally amazed at some of the responses to these stories. Iduke, I maybe under the impression you are a top notch driver and know the driver's handbook front to back. Geana, if you have information on any suspect, it would be quicker and safer to apprehend the suspect without more unnecessary trouble putting peoples' lives in danger. Admiral, what does a harley or even if it was rolls-royce have to do with getting away or caught?

To read this, I wonder why our children act the way they do in this day and time.

Nothing barrettbear. He will get caught. I just wanted to stir the harley/ride burner pot.

lduke, I've been all over the country roads and never seen any Murfreesboro Police Officers riding crotch rockets. What kind of kool-aid are you drinking?

By: Geana on 10/4/08
I know Barret, but it's kinda difficult to have information on a suspect if one doesn't have a clue to go by.

By: barrettbear on 10/4/08
Geana, there is not one word about clue in the story. It is information about the suspect. There whereabouts, where they live, stay, work, personal relatives, friends, people who know them. When that kind of information comes across the desk, then the law can follow in and capture the suspect before they endanger anyone else by eluding the law as before.

It is my understanding that Murfreesboro Police Department implemented a "No Pursuit" policy years ago. There have been instances where they put aside this policy when the suspect has been involved in senseless random voilence, attempted murder, etc... The Sheriff's Office has no such policy that I know of and they will engage where the city left off. The State Troopers also will folllow in and they can PIT, ram, or otherwise disable the suspect at their discretion.

Once the deputies obtained a licence plate number, they did the right thing in terminating the pursuit. At least they now have a place to start the investigation. These "racing" bikes on the roadway have caused more problems in the last few years, mostly due to the young age of the drivers who think they are above the law and indestructable. The high speed flights from law enforcement, the reckless disregard for human life, including their own and total disregard for traffic laws lead to nothing but more traffic deaths. Good job guys at the Sheriff's office, keep up the good work and protetion of the public.

We were on 24 about 2 weeks ago and their were 2 guys riding a crotch rocket in the fast lane. As we watched in disbelief both decided to pull up the bike and ride on one wheel for quite a distance in the lane. How irresponsible is that? Not to mention half crazy they could have killed themselves or lost it and killed someone else. What's wrong with these idiots?

"they could have killed themselves"

They will.
