The Riverdale girls made short work of courageous but over-matched Smyrna on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Warriors won 80-50.
Alexa Middleton had 25 points and Shacobia Barbee had 19 for Riverdale. Smyrna was led by Alie Bolton with 18 points.
It was vintage Riverdale as they committed only eight turnovers and forced 25 from the Lady Bulldogs. The Red and Gold also won the rebound battle 36-28.
The Blackman boys squeaked out a 45-44 win over the Smyrna boys on a free throw by Damian Sales with under a second left.
The Blaze won the rebound battle 25-12 but committed 17 turnovers to Smyrna’s eight. Leading the scoring for the Blaze was Darius Thompson with 17 points while PJ Whitaker had 12 and Wayne Jones 10 for the Bulldogs.
In the third game of the evening the Oakland girls beat Blackman 40-38.
Oakland won the rebound battle 21-18 and only committed seven turnovers while Blackman had 14.
Oakland’s Ellen Riggins led the Oakland scoring with 16. Ellen now has 961 points in her career. Chelsey Hall had 12 points for Blackman and Micah Norris had 10.
In the final boys game of the evening La Vergne managed to lose the rebound battle to Siegel 25-35 and commit nearly three-times as many turnovers as the Stars 17-6.
The Wolverines also shot a miserable 29 percent for the second half with no threes and watched as Siegel’s Charles Clark scored 27 points for game high honors.
La Vergne did one other thing – they won! The final score was 79-75.
How Siegel manages to lose games like this is a mystery.
I might add they could sure use some student support as Siegel “Nation” had 23 students at tipoff.
Robert Brandon had 17 points for Siegel, Damian Dial had 18 for La Vergne, followed by Marquis Johns with 17.
Oakland, with Assistant Principal Rick Collins serving as tournament director, has done an amazing job hosting the tournament. Great job!
