A woman reported being raped before dawn Friday outside of Gilligan’s in Murfreesboro by a Nashville man who she recently met through an online dating site.

The nearly two-hour incident began just after midnight in the 500 block of West Main Street, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department incident report.

The woman told police the two were on a first date and decided to go to Gilligan’s, where she consumed several alcoholic drinks before passing out in the bathroom. When she was discovered by a bar employee, the man was contacted and told to come pick her up and take her home.

The man allegedly put the woman in the backseat of her car, pulled her pants off, and proceeded to have sex with her as she repeatedly told him to stop. He then drove the woman’s car to IHOP Restaurant on Old Fort Parkway, where his vehicle was parked, and fled the area.

Officers transported the woman to Middle Tennessee Medical Center, so that a sexual assault kit could be completed. A detective with the Criminal Investigations Division was also called to the hospital to collect evidence and gather information.

As of Friday, no charges had been filed against the man, and the investigation continues into the allegations.

Suspicious fire under investigation

Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious vehicle fire that occurred Thursday night on East Castle Street.

An investigator with the Murfreesboro Fire Department determined the fire was most likely started on purpose, according to a Police Department incident report.

The woman who owned the car told police she had not driven it since early that morning. But, she said about a week prior to the fire, she was involved in a verbal altercation with a man who threatened to blow her car up. However, she refused to reveal the man’s identity out of fear for her safety.

Deer dies after running into store

Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency were forced to put down a deer that broke through the glass front door Wednesday of the Lamp Gallery on North Maple Street in Murfreesboro.

Although the deer, which was seriously injured, did not break any of the glass lighting on display, it managed to run through the business before getting stuck in the bathroom.

Officers were called to the scene once the storeowner and another man successfully corralled it into a corner, but it was too late for the young buck. The deer died a short time later.
