Residents discovered gang-related graffiti spray painted onto the garbage disposal area and mailboxes Jan. 5 at Applegate Apartments on Wenlon Drive.

An unknown number of suspects tagged “MS 13” onto the structures, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department incident report filed by Officer Kristy Inglish.

MS-13 is a gang that operates in more than 40 states and has roughly 10,000 members nationwide, most of whom are first generation Salvadoran-Americans, but they may also be from Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.

During the past few years, the number of members has significantly increased in the Southeast and Northeast, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

As of Tuesday, no suspects have been charged in connection with the vandalism, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Jewelry stolen in burglary

More than $8,000 worth of silver jewelry was stolen Friday from a home on Jamie Circle.

An unknown number of suspects entered the residence by breaking the window next to the front door, according to an MPD incident report filed by Jason Brown.

Detectives also responded to the home to process the scene, and an investigation has been opened into the matter.

Two cars burglarized in complex

Two complainants reported Saturday their vehicles had been burglarized while parked outside of the town homes on Empress Drive, located off of Northfield Boulevard.

Both reported their global positioning systems – one a Garmin and the other a Tom Tom – were taken at some point after midnight, according to MPD incident reports filed by Officers Christopher Williams and J. Carroll.

Neither complainant could identify a possible suspect, and the investigation into both automobile burglaries continues.

The only way to stop these types of crimes is to have more patrol cars out there. Vecause sadly, it is probable that the first and third crimes will never be found. This is why the laws should be tougher, these people get away with multiple crimes before being caught once.
