Investigators sifting through the burned debris of the Fireworks Supermarket are making progress but still have not determined the cause of the fire that destroyed the building Monday on South Church Street.
Murfreesboro Fire investigators, sheriff’s detectives and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have not been able to get inside the building because of hazards, said Assistant Fire Chief Gary Farley.
“There’s a possibility the fire started in the storage area but that has not been substantiated,” Farley said.
Fireworks exploded when fire engulfed the building at rush hour Monday. Three employees escaped without injury. No customers were inside the business. The fire destroyed the employees’ vehicles.
ATF paid for crews with cranes to begin moving debris away, he said. The large boot atop the building and the front of the building were removed and the air conditioning system was taken from the roof.
Clearing the debris will allow investigators to get inside the building to determine a cause of the fire, he said.
The business was insured. An investigator hired by the insurance company was on the scene.
“It’s an unsafe building,” Farley said. “We’re taking it slow. They’re making progress.”
