Cows, locals run for good cause | Event, Run Chicken Run

The event was kicked off by the annual race of the cows as four hearty souls dressed in Chick-Fil-A cow costumes ran a quick 100-meter dash to pump up crowd.
Nine years to the day after one of the worse tragedies in American history, a group of Middle Tennesseans gathered to do what Tennesseans do best: volunteer and support a worthy cause.

The cause was the second annual Run Chickin Run 10K race Saturday, Sept. 11 on the Murfreesboro Greenway, benefiting World Vision and hosted by Chick-Fil-A and Fleet Feet Sports.

Proceeds from the 2010 Run Chickin Run went directly to benefit World Vision Charities. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization that works with victims of natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti and flood victims in Nashville. Last year’s race raised more than $8,000 and it is estimated this year more than doubled the total

Memories of terrorist attacks and the threat of inclement weather did not stop the estimated 1,000 runners, walkers, fitness enthusiasts and those simply looking for a healthy start to the weekend.

Participants, ranging in age from 13 to 81 years old, took part in the event quickly gaining popularity and staying power in the Murfreesboro community.

The entrants attacked the 6.2-mile layout that began at the pavilion on Medical Center Parkway, then looped through Stone River National Battle Park and finished back at the pavilion.

The event was kicked off by the annual race of the cows as four hearty souls dressed in Chick-Fil-A cow costumes ran a quick 100-meter dash to pump up crowd. Moments later the starting gun sounded and 1,000 energy-filled participants started the race.

In the men’s contest, Ryan Snellen of Nashville won the event for the second straight year. Snellen’s 32:59 time of victory shaved almost a full minute off of his mark a year ago.

“I enjoy this race. It is a fun layout in a beautiful park,” Snellen said. “The community has gotten behind quickly in its first two years. Chick-Fil-A and Fleet Feat do an awesome job with this event.”

Jillian Mastroianni of Nashville was victorious in the women’s race in 40:13.

After the race, participants were greeted by local businesses such as Chick-Fil-A, GNC and Smoothie King with post-race refreshments such as chicken sandwiches, fruit and smoothies. Daily’s Market provided bottled water for the event.
