School Resource Officer Sgt. Kerry Nelson would go through any measure for his students at Stewart’s Creek Elementary School.
In fact, Nelson allowed a teacher to swipe off part of his hair if the class brought in at least 1,000 cans of food to feed hungry Rutherford County residents for Thanksgiving Day.
By the end of the week, Nelson’s head was shaved and Stewart’s Creek students donated 6,043 cans of food, the most of an elementary school participating.
“I’m so proud of my kids,” Nelson said, adding, Principal Richard Zago supported the drive. “Instilling students giving back to their community is law enforcement and the School Resource Officer program at its finest.”
Central Middle School SRO Chris Templeton said students at 20 participating schools collected cash and 61,942 cans of food. The food was donated to the Rutherford County and Smyrna/La Vergne Food Banks, some schools and churches in communities and was distributed to families for Thanksgiving meals. Greenhouse Ministries and the Salvation Army were expected to receive a portion of the cans.
“Both food banks were more than filled,” Templeton said. “Here in Rutherford County, there is not a reason someone is not without a Thanksgiving dinner.”
