Some students from Stewart’s Creek, Stewartsboro and Blackman elementaries will go to a new school next year, after Rutherford County Schools adopted a new zone for Brown’s Chapel Elementary School Tuesday night.
The board didn’t offer a grandfather option for these students because the number of students who would qualify defeats the purpose of building a new school, RCS spokesman James Evans said.
“The projections show that too many students would be left at Blackman and Stewartsboro if they offered a grandfather option,” Evans explained. “Doing so would mean we would still have to have portable classrooms at those to schools. The purpose of the new school is to get students out of portables and in to regular classrooms.”
Stewarts Creek, Stewartsboro and Blackman elementaries will all contribute to the 650 students who will attend classes at Brown’s Chapel in the Blackman community next school year.
Parents can apply for zone exemptions, which begin in April, for the next school year, Evans said.
RCS also had looked at rezoning a few students along Medical Center Parkway, Thompson Lane and Broad Street to the new school, but decided against it because of the distance. Those students will attend Blackman Elementary instead.
The proposed Brown’s Chapel Elementary zone will contain 735 students with 170 students from Stewarts Creek, 250 students from Stewartsboro and 300 from Blackman Elementary. The school can house up to 1,000 elementary students.
The principal position hasn’t been filled yet, but should be by the middle of February.
The new school is scheduled to open for the 2009-2010 school year and cost around $21 million.
