Rutherford County Schools will not cancel classes today because of weather conditions.

Because of the heavy rains over the past few days, southern Rutherford County is experiencing flash flooding and residents are being evacuated to Christiana Elementary School.

RCS spokesman James Evans said schools will not be closed because of the flooding, but school officials are keeping a close eye on the situation as more rain continues to fall.

“It’s actually safer to keep the kids in schools than sending them out onto the flooded roads,” Evans said.

But parents, who have children at Christiana Elementary and Middle, Riverdale, Rockvale Elementary and Middle, Buchanan Elementary and Eagleville schools, can pick them up early today, he added.
