As part of ongoing efforts to train, practice and evaluate the preparedness of our schools for emergencies, various safety drills will be held at all Rutherford County Schools throughout the week, Oct. 18-22. The operation is being overseen and executed by the Sheriff Department’s School Resource Officer division, which coordinates with Rutherford County Schools about safety procedures. The media is asked to publish information about the drills in an effort to avoid any sort of panic or confusion by parents or residents. Five years ago, Rutherford County Schools adopted a uniform emergency plan for all schools to increase consistency and understanding during emergencies. Each year, the school system continuously trains personnel at the schools and holds drills to evaluate those procedures. The system was initiated by Rutherford County Schools Director Harry Gill Jr. in coordination with the School Resource Officer division of the Sheriff’s Department. In the past, the school system and the SRO division have held drills on simulated hostage scenarios, bomb threats and various other emergency situations.
