Sixth District Rutherford County Commissioner Joe Frank Jernigan, 69, of Readyvile was charged with misdemeanor theft Wednesday.

Jernigan was allegedly caught on camera stealing his opponent's political advertising sign.

To further complicate the issue, the family on whose property the sign was located claims that Jernigan was driving a vehicle with Rutherford County government license tags. The commissioner works for the Rutherford County Highway Department and has use of a county car.

He was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a criminal summons that was taken out by the Anderson family who reportedly confronted Commissioner Jernigan on their property.

It is important to note that a summons is not a warrant, but a document that orders the suspect to appear in General Sessions Court.
