Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City schools will receive some extra help from the state to provide for students displaced by the Good Friday Tornado.
“In all, the state still has $55,000 and it split it between to the two school systems because of the tornado. We each get $27,500,” RCS spokesman James Evans said.
The money is available from the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal program to provide services to homeless or displaced students, Evans explained.
“The money will be used to supplement our existing homeless student program, which is known as ATLAS,” Evans said.
Rutherford County Schools had 70 students displaced by the EF-4 tornado that carved a 23.5-mile path through Rutherford County Friday, April 10. The system currently has 640 homeless or displaced students enrolled in classes.
