The debate over two new middle schools goes before the Murfreesboro City Council Thursday night as the Rutherford County Board of Education asks the city to annexation the property for both schools.
RCS spokesman James Evans said the request was made to make it easier for the schools, should they be approved by the county commission, to be connected to the city’s sewer system.
“The easiest way to get on the city sewer system is for the schools to be annexed into the city. The alternative is to set up a special sewer district or get a variance,” Evans said.
The proposed Oakland area and Buchanan area middle schools have met some opposition in the Rutherford County Commission, which denied a request to move forward with the schools last month. The schools will be up for another vote this month.
The council will also conduct public hearings and vote: - To annex approximately 24.0 acres located north of Joe B. Jackson Parkway and to adopt for same a Plan of Services; Joe B. Jackson Parkway Partners, GP, applicant.
- To zone approximately 24.0 acres located north of Joe B. Jackson Parkway as Light Industrial (L-I) District, simultaneous with annexation; Joe B. Jackson Parkway Partners, GP, applicant.
- To rezone approximately 20.28 acres from Boxwood Plantation Planned Development south of Salem Pike from Planned Unit Development (PUD) District to Single-Family Residential Fifteen (RS-15) District; Hubert McCullough, applicant.
- To rezone approximately .21 acres located on the corner of East Sevier Street and South Highland Avenue from Residential Multi-Family Sixteen (RM-16) District to Single-Family Residential Four (RS-4) District; Habitat for Humanity, applicant.
