Throneberry Properties got the final nod from Murfreesboro City Council Thursday night to build an apartment complex on East Main Street.
The council passed the rezoning request for property, between Juliet Avenue and Twin Oak Drive on East Main Street, in a 4-2 vote, with Vice Mayor Chris Bratcher and Councilman Shane McFarland dissenting.
Rutherford County Commissioner Robert Peay, who represents the district where the apartments will be located, spoke out against the development citing surrounding neighbors concerns about traffic impact.
The development, which Throneberry Properties wants to build, has caused concern among area residents, who fear the impact of the development to traffic on nearby country roads.
City officials, like Mayor Tommy Bragg and Planning Director Joseph Aydelott, have defended the city’s traffic impact study in past meetings. Aydelott again defended the traffic studies Thursday night.
The development was removed from the council’s agenda earlier this month, because the meeting was held at 5:30 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m.
The meeting was scheduled for an earlier time because the council gathered to hear a presentation on storm water runoff in the city's sewer system and there was some confusion in the community about the timing of the meeting.
The confusion prompted Councilman Doug Young to ask to remove the item from the agenda.
