Despite concerns from landowners, Murfreesboro City Council approved annexing property along Wilkinson Pike on first reading at its regular Thursday night meeting.

“I’ve lived in my house for 26 years. It’s not just a house it’s a home,” 2512 West Park Drive resident Pat Bowland said.

Property owners spoke out during a public hearing, voicing concerns about drainage and flooding, commercial development, and separating the land from neighboring property, which will remain in the county.

The Murfreesboro Planning Department has received inquiries about rezoning parts of the property proposed for annexation, City Planning Director Joseph Aydelott explained.

“I think it’s time for the city to get ahead of the game,” he said. The land is directly across from the construction site for a new Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center.

After a lengthy discussion, the council unanimously approved annexing nine pieces of property along the south side of Wilkinson Pike. The area proposed for annexation holds five vacant lots and four severely damaged homes that were damaged by the Good Friday Tornado. Map

Then in a surprise move, the council unanimously denied rezoning the same property with no explanation.

Many of the same landowners spoke out against rezoning the property and even State Sen. Bill Ketron (R-Murfreesboro) got in on the argument.

Ketron said he was concerned about removing zoning protections for the Stones River National Battlefield and how that would affect the historic site.

Council denied rezoning the area as follows:
• Approximately 10.3 acres from General Office (OG) District to Highway Commercial (CH) District;
• Approximately 5.54 acres from Single-Family Residential Fifteen (RS-15) District to Office General (OG) District;
• Approximately 2.95 acres from Gateway Design Overlay 2 (GDO-2) District to Gateway Design Overlay 1 (GDO-1) District; and
• To remove approximately 11.62 acres from the Battlefield Protection (BPD) District.

Murfreesboro City Council also approved taking out loans to revamp the aging pools at SportsCom.

The city looks to spend up to $3.2 million to refurbish both the indoor and outdoor pools at the recreation facility that was built in 1987.

Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Director Lanny Goodwin estimates the project will cost $2.9 million

Construction will start in February with the outdoor pool, which will reopen on Memorial Day without any weather delays. The indoor pool will then close to be resurfaced and get a new filtration system.

When finished, the outdoor pool will have a “water-park setting,” complete with a “sprayground,” water slides, an open lap pool and climbing wall,” Goodwin said previously.
