Back in the day, this county had some great elementary basketball rivals.
Walter Hill and Lascassas, Rockvale and Eagleville, and Kittrell and, well, anybody come to mind.
There were others, and some of the rivalries lasted decades.
Earlier this week, the Whitworth-Buchanan Yellow Jackets played host to the Christiana Cougars in one of the area’s better and newest middle school rivalries.
The sparkling new gym, with Principal Avy Seymore in attendance, had a great crowd for the games.
In the girls contest, Christiana coaches Cory Bransford, Sarah Bransford and Rodney Bonds ran their record to 8-1 with a 56-15 victory over the Buchanan squad.
The Cougars took an early 19-6 first quarter lead and never looked back. Christiana got 17 points from Jazz Bond and 12 from Aaliyah Patterson, and some fine rebounding from the entire team in posting the win.
They also know how to fast break and finish.
The Cougars have either led or been tied for No. 1 in the 11-member league all year.
I think Bransford has got a contender for the league title.
Jazz Bond, by the way, has now scored more than 1,000 points in her middle school career. The last player I remember doing this in the league was Tyshia Petty who also played for Christiana. Petty is now a star at Riverdale.
Dajah Messerger led Whitworth-Buchanan with four points.
The result was the opposite in the boy’s game as Whitworth-Buchanan, coached by Chris Hooper, won 54-32 behind a full court press and an attacking fast break.
The Buchanan lead was 16 at the half, and they won by 22 as Christiana had a 16-point fourth quarter. Whitworth-Buchanan is No. 2 in the league and trails Siegel by one game in the standings. The Yellow Jackets are full of good athletes, and they can run the floor with purpose.
In the win, Greedy Howse had 20 for Buchanan followed by Tae Sneed with 12. Rodney Murry led Christiana with seven points, followed by Kenny Strawbridge with six.
Get out to a middle school double header soon because you definitely will not be disappointed. |
