The TSSAA voted Wednesday afternoon to select Cookeville as the site for the annual BlueCross Bowl games.

"We were surprised but happy for Cookville because they really put in a substantial bid," said Mona Herring, vice president of the Convention and Visitors Bureau for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce.

Rutheford County put in the minimum bid of $231,000 while Cookville placed a bid of $250,000.

Herring said, however, that the revenues for the football championships have been declining each year so it is not as great a loss as it would have been several years ago. Rutherford County has hosted the BlueCross Bowl since 2000.

TSSAA board members also discussed the Spring Fling bids for 2010 and 2011. Bid packages to host the 2010 and 2011 BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Spring Fling were sent to those cities that expressed interest the second week in May.

Rutherford County plans to place a bid, Herring said.

Proposals are due in the state office by July 13 of each city submitting a proposal will have an opportunity to discuss their proposal at the August meeting prior to the board making their selection.

So is this just for 2009? Thats quite a bit of change we lost out on.

It's for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

So Murfreesboro bids the MINIMUM and thinks that that will be enough to keep the game here. Nice job to everyone involved. (dripping sarcasm)

You mean we were paying them to be here, good riddence.

By: Macgyver on 6/11/09
Farmall, the amount of money brought here by these teams is insane. I hate the traffic and the fact the wait at dinner is longer, I would know I eat out every meal. But its a couple weeks a year and its good money. Atleast we still have Spring Fling which is a much larger event.

So who was paying them? If they bring so much money in, then those who make the money need to step up to the plate.

Each city had to make a bid to pay TSSAA to come which basically makes sure TSSAA at leasts makes some sort of profit out of the deal, since they've been losing money the last several years. I think it was a minimum bid of $231,000. I think I read somewhere that their operating costs recently have been about $200,000. In return the city makes money from taxes, etc. and the facilities make their operational fees. Cookeville seems like it was probably the most profitable choice. I think hotels will be at a premium there and the stadium holds about half as many fans and press/suites.

matt, are you one of those who complain about tax dollars going for the MT baseball stadium and Track Stadium funds from the city?

I am soooo glad!! What a pain to get around the Boro when they are here!! YEEEAAAAHHHHHH!!

Unless someone can provided some empirical data (not simply "the money they bring is is insane") that demonstartes this group brought in significantly more than the $231,000 it took to get them here this is no loss. Does the taxpayer ever realize his investment? Apparently not since it was cut loose.

Chamber of Commerce with the restaurants and hotels should have stepped up. Doesn't do much for MTSU and Boro residents but give headaches.

ItsGood,

No. I support the use of tax dollars to enhance tourism to our county. Why does my support or lack of concern you?

By: Macgyver on 6/12/09
SocEtTuem: The Blue Cross Bowl brings in about 1 million a year in revenue and the Spring Fling brings in 3.5 million a year. That’s a great ROI. If I told you I could turn a quarter into a dollar year after year would you object?

The City gets the money back from the gate receipts. The excess funds go to TSSAA. Tax receipts in restaurants and hotels are some of the highest in our community.

These revenues do not require our County to educate or provide other services our ciitizens receive. They spend their money and go back home.

Cookeville will be found lacking in many areas, especially hotels and restaurants
