Rutherford County’s Board of Commissioners weighs in on freezing the property taxes of qualifying senior citizens at its monthly meeting Thursday night.

The commission’s resolution will freeze property taxes for the approximately 4,000 seniors who make less than the county’s median income or $35,200 per year.

The county’s Steering and Budget committees recommended implementing the tax freeze at meetings last week.

The county also has two property tax relief programs that benefit low-income seniors and disabled veterans, Budget Committee Chairwoman Joyce Ealy explained previously.

The commission will also vote on whether to continue these programs along with the senior tax freeze.

In November 2006, voters across the state approved plans to relieve some pressure from seniors’ wallets and possibly save some homes from the taxman by freezing property taxes.

For as long as they qualify for the program, qualifying senior homeowners’ property taxes will not increase if the county increases the property tax rate in the future.
