The Rutherford County Commission approved a legal services agreement after much discussion on the powers of veto it gives contracted County Attorney Jim Cope.
A motion presented by Commissioner Ronald Williams to strip the language and replace it with advise and consent was defeated after a warning from Cope on the changes.
"I have made substantial concessions throughout here on all of this," Cope warned commissioners. "If you want to start tinkering with it, then I've got a lot of things I'd like to change. I'm not willing to do further changes on it for reasons I've already stated."
The agreement was passed 20-1 with Williams being the only "no" vote.
The contract has been under negotiation for nearly a year and moves the county toward forming its own legal services department. Currently, Cope serves two-year terms that are approved by commission. Cope has served as county attorney for more than 25 years. |
