CNN profiles Islamic Center conflict

From New York to California, since Sept. 11, 2001, fears of radical Islam, terrorism, and “Sharia law” have fueled opposition against mosque projects and launched a national debate around religious freedom protections.

Murfreesboro, Tenn. has just over 100,000 people, 140+ churches, and one mosque.  For decades, Muslims have lived and prayed in Murfreesboro without incident, yet in June 2010, when the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro sought county approval to build a new 53,000 square foot Islamic center to include a school, a gym, a cemetery, and a mosque – construction plans were met with some support from residents (Muslim and non-Muslim), but also with suspicion and street protests, and even national attention when televangelist Pat Robertson voiced his opposition to the proposal.

CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien chronicles this dramatic public debate in Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door, which will debut on CNN/U.S. on Sunday, Mar. 27 at 8:00p.m. ET and PT.  The one-hour documentary will re-air on Saturday, Apr. 2 at the same airtimes. The current Islamic Center of Murfreesboro says it needs to expand to accommodate the need for larger prayer and activity spaces for the growing Muslim community.  Yet, as the center proceeded with its plans, the imam began receiving hostile telephone calls, and the construction site was vandalized multiple times – including spray painting of the words “NOT WELCOME” over the construction sign, and an arson fire that destroyed equipment at the site.  A CNN interview of members of the mosque at the construction site was interrupted by the sounds of gunfire, prompting calls to the local police who arrived to investigate the source of the shots.

Kevin Fisher, a 45-year-old single parent, is the outspoken leader against the planned center in Murfreesboro, his hometown of over 20 years.  Fisher has organized other town residents via social media to gather thousands of signatures, organized large rallies, and filed legal injunctions against the expansion of the Islamic center.

“Neighbors were outraged that something of this nature was being basically being shoved down our throats and we didn’t know anything about it,” Fisher says in the documentary.

Influential town residents Sally and Howard Wall were major funders for the legal efforts to seek an injunction against the mosque.  Sally Wall cites media reports of radical Muslim violence around the world and in the U.S. as the reasons for her concerns.

“There is this enormous building, which is going to be occupied, by people, who are of the same religion of the people we are fighting in Afghanistan,” she says.

When O’Brien points out that Muslims in the U.S. overwhelmingly seem to identify themselves as Americans, governed under U.S. laws, Wall says, “I think Sharia law is trying to creep in [the U.S.] – because that’s what they are taught...I think they should try to come in the 21st Century.  If they [Muslims] would quit covering, [they] would find this a much easier place to live,” she tells O’Brien.

“This is America. What is this?  People can disagree with each other kindly,” says Imam Bahloul, “but violence like this is nonsense... for children to be scared in the Mosque, this is bad...this is sad.”

Additional reporting on the debate over the Murfreesboro Islamic Center, coverage of the Congressional hearings requested by Rep. Peter King (R-NY) on what he describes as “the radicalization of American Muslims,” and excerpts from Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door can be found at www.cnn.com/inamerica.  CNN Student News is producing an Educator and Parent Guide for the documentary, which will promote critical analysis of news and information include discussion questions, and a learning activity.  The guide will be available on www.CNNStudentNews.com prior to the debut of the documentary as a companion viewing aid.

Jason Samuels is lead producer, Kimberly Arp-Babbit is producer and David Timko is producer / editor for Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door.  Al DiSanti and Ross Helman are editors for this production.  Geraldine Moriba is the executive producer for CNN’s In America unit.

People who assert that the U.S. is threatened by Sharia Law don't even understand the function and standing of the Constitution. Sharia Law is un-Constitutional so there is no threat -- it is a total fiction to even suggest this possibility! That only leaves an observer from a more educated part of the country to assume that these people are not only ignorant but motivated by biggotry and hatred of anyone who doesn't look like them and believe in the same religion that is shared by only 33% of the world. They sure aren't prepared for the day that WASPs are a minority in the U.S., not far down the timeline.

A 'WAS' (no longer a 'WASP') from the most literate area of the nation.

This town should be ashamed of itself. The protesting and bigotry is entirely hypocritical. The rest of the country agrees. View the Twitter hash from the documentary to see yourself: http://twitter.com/#!/search?q=%23musliminamerica

This town should be ashamed yourselves after this piece. Despite the clown of a lawyer spouting utter nonsense, it was good to see at least the legal system is intact. What a waste of time and money.

I ask you an honest question: Who exactly were the cause of the recent financial debacle and the subsequent bailout making the perps even richer and the working people even poorer and in-depth to the greedy? They couldn’t have been Muslims because like Christianity for 1900 years, they forbid Usury. Forget Muslims and the Mid East protesting, we need to take to the street right here.

Islam is NOT a religion. It is a way of life. They are not just in-tolerant of others; they kill anyone that does not believe what they believe. I have seen what can happen in Islam controlled countries; I have seen what Dearborn, Michigan has become (an Islam controlled community); I have seen the bodies of people that did not support Islamic laws. I have seen the several block brick walled compound in London that has armed guards that do not allow anyone, including police from entering. Idiots are looking at a Trojan Horse and not seeing what is inside. It is amazing how liberal idiots will fall for anything. The Muslims are counting on that and using the laws that protect peaceful people to get theirselves in control. Just wait until they get people on the commissions and are elected to official positons in communities. Then you can just put your head between your legs and kiss your you know what away. If you know the history of Islam law, you know that this is not a peaceful group.

I thought CNN did a pretty credible job although I would have liked to have heard more from the non-Muslims who live in our community who are strong advocates for religious freedom.

Jimmychurch, shouldn't all religion be a way of life? If it's not, what's the point?

On a side note, I think the comments worrying about the size of the proposed mosque and traffic concerns are extremely ironic considering the size and traffic associated with World Outreach and other M'boro churches.

To jimmychurch: Finally, someone who understands what this is about!!!

Islam is not a live and let live warm and fuzzy belief system. It is a do it our way or suffer the consequences system that is absolutely intolerant of dissent. A system that treats women as little more than chattel and is intolerant of anything and everythin non-Islamic. It is anything but a religion of peace.

It is very easy and understandable to be afraid of what is different Remember the purpose of the Civil Rights movement in America? Please tell me that we are not regressing back to the sixties!! I am a Christian who became the proud mother-in law of the best son-in-law ever two years ago. The man treats my daughter like a queen. And yes, you guessed it, he is Muslum. My daughter is so lucky! I couldn't of prayed for a better husband for my daughter. She celebrates Ramadan and he celebrates Christmas. They worship the same God. We all do!!

By: jimmychurch on 3/28/11
Religion should be a way of life, but not one where you kill everyone that is not part of it. How someone can compare the 60's Civil Rights Movement to a Muslim, has already drank the Kool-Aide. Just let this Muslim take your grandkids and your daughter back to an Arab country and do your praying that you may never see them again. I don't see any comparison from my God to Ali.

1. You refine heroin for a living, but you have a moral objection to liquor. You may be a Muslim.

2. You own a $3,000 machine gun and $5,000 rocket launcher, but you can't afford shoes. You may be a Muslim.

3. You have more wives than teeth. You may be a Muslim.

4. You wipe your butt with your bare hand, but consider bacon unclean. You may be a Muslim.

5. You think vests come in two styles: bullet-proof and suicide. You may be a Muslim.

6. You can't think of anyone you haven't declared Jihad against. You may be a Muslim.

7. You consider television dangerous, but sometimes carry explosives in your clothing. You may be a Muslim.

8. You were amazed to discover that cell phones have uses other than setting off roadside bombs. You may be a Muslim.

9. You have nothing against women and think every man should own at least four. You may be a Muslim.

10. You find this offensive or racist and don't forward it. You may be a Muslim.

Hello...my name is John and I am from Montreal... up north as you might refer to it. I saw CNN and while I like Soledad O'Brien, she/CNN did a hatchet job... as usual. Why did they not show parts of Europe where the Jihadist control parts of the city once their numbers reach a certain percentage?? The police are afraid to go inside of those areas. Why did they not show the demonstrations where the placards read "Europe.. the real Holocaust is coming for you".. "To H-ll with Democracry".. "He who insults Allah should be de-capitated" etc. I am 110% with the proponents of the city that this mosque is not where they community should go. I also saw the lawyer for the citizens and while I did not show the whole arguement.. I found it lacking. He mentioned that the Muslims think they will get 7 virgins if they get killed during a suicide mission.. this is clearly wrong for the real number is 72.. GROTESQUE.

I am including an hour long educational video.. BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN and I follow this subject closely for I fear the fate of Western Democracy and our way of a liberal lifestyle is at stake. Most of the politicians are too afraid to touch this subject and your President clearly has an affinity towards them for obvious reasons.. both his father and step-father were Muslim. I would appreciate if the people that see this could comment on it and perhaps send it to the proponents of the action to stop the building of this Mosque for if not, you will not recognize Freesboro in 10 years.. it will look more like Dearborn Michigan.. and Dearborn looks more like a Middle East Arab town more than it looks to be an American town.

Good citizens of Freesboro.. be afraid of the consequences. All you need to do is look to Europe and listen to this video.. done by recognized theologeons that will teach you of the consequences of closing your eyes. Called "What the West needs to Know."

Good luck to you in your fight and G-d bless!!

here is another little piece of what one can expect when Muslims reach a certain percentage; a critical mass. See what is happening in France... beyond belief!! The citizenry of Freesboro should never let the naive and feeble minded people who adhere to the see no evil.. etc. decide the path for them. In the end, it will be a disaster.

Ooops... should have said Murfreesboro; not Freesboro. Apologies!!

We as a nation need to stop thinking that a few loud screamers are the voices of all. If you look at the last few years you see idiots screamed in town hall meetings about "keeping the government out of my Medicare" really??? and people bought it because they did not become involved. Accusing all Muslims of terrorism is like accusing all catholics of pedophilia, and baptists of graft and homosexual behavior. because a few are loud does not mean all are the same.

By: jimmychurch on 3/29/11
No one is screaming pubic-lius. There are things going on in other parts of the world that you just discount as saying, it is not happening here. It has started here. I have seen it already in action in parts of Europe. The police are afraid to upset them and they do what they want to do when they want to do it. Some Baptists do take graft, some priests are homosexual and muslims kill those that don't believe in what they believe. That's the truth.

By: publius on 3/29/11
name calling grow up. Have you been to other parts of the world? Is that were you get your vast knowledge, or from Fox news. when you can not discuss an issue without vulgarity it makes you a screamer.

By: jimmychurch on 3/31/11

Love it when Moving On.Org people automatically think all opinions other than there own come from Fox News. I don't think I have watched Fox News in close to two years, if then. Yes, I have been to many parts of this earth. You say I am a "screamer" and then retort with my being a name caller. Isn't that being the Muslim calling the redneck uneducated. I so wish I had your brains. You are a very strange person.

By: publius on 3/31/11
I am not a member or a fan of move on.org I am sorry your feelings are hurt. But I repeat if you can not discuss an issue without vulgarity it says something about you.

jimmychurch,
If you were educated you would know that a religion is based on if it prays and follows a "God" of some form! It doesn’t have to be “YOUR” God! NEW FLASH!!! Not everyone believes that Jesus is the savior of the world, and it is their right to do so! So, get a grip knucklehead! I think you all need to get out from under that “old hoe Sally Wall” and her twisted way of thinking! She and her husband think they own this town and they have most of the mindless idiots here following like sheep! Kevin Fisher is just a token player who is being used by her and the rest of the old garbage that has been kicking around this town for a 100 years! I say we should demolish about 100 churches instead of farting around with 1 mosque! Shame on you all! Sally Wall is a bigot and a religious racist! Hopefully she and Howard will be buried in the ground very soon and this town can be free of them once and for all!
