ATLANTA - Middle Tennessee senior forward Alysha Clark has been named as one of 30 midseason candidates for the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T it was announced Thursday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. It marks the second-straight season the Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native has garnered a spot on the prestigious list.
The list was voted on by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists from around the country. The board based its criteria on player performances this season.
The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is the most prestigious national basketball award and is given annually to the women's college basketball player of the year. This year, the award will be presented at the NCAA Women's Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.
Clark is the lone Sun Belt Conference representative among the 30 players. She currently ranks second nationally with 26.5 points per game, tops in the league, to go along with 11.1 rebounds per game. She scored a game-high 25 points and hauled in a game-best tying eight rebounds in Wednesday's 101-58 win at FIU.
In her career, Clark ranks seventh among the all-time NCAA leaders with 70 career double-doubles and her 2,667 points currently place her 21st on the all-time scoring list.
As a presenting sponsor since 2005, AT&T has set the standard in fan participation in determining this year's winner. Through the power and ease of text messaging, fan voting will account for an unprecedented 25 percent of the final results - more than any other national college basketball award.
Beginning March 22, AT&T wireless customers - and sports fans on other wireless networks - will be able to text their votes for the player of their choice. Fans will be eligible to cast their vote for the winner until 11:59 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 3, 2010. AT&T is making the voting open to other wireless carriers, allowing even more fans to participate. Other wireless carriers must opt-in for their subscribers to participate. Clark will join the rest of her Blue Raider teammates as they close the regular season at 11 a.m. (Central) Saturday against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. The contest will be broadcast live on the Sun Belt Network, shown locally on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) with Lyn Rollins handling the play-by-play and Debbie Leonard serving as the color analyst.
