Murfreesboro reached out to Rutherford County’s legislative delegation Thursday night for help in improving Bradyville Pike.

The city council unanimously approved a resolution at its weekly meeting requesting the county’s state representatives and senators to lobby Tennessee’s Department of Transportation to widen Bradyville Pike.

“As you may know, the section of SR 99 (Bradyville Pike) between Southeast Broad Street and Rutherford Boulevard is a two-lane, substandard road without sidewalks or adequate drainage facilities.

“As a state route, these improvements are the responsibility of the State of Tennessee. Recently, there has been considerable public discussion about the lack of sidewalks on this road,” a letter to Senators Jim Tracy and Sen. Bill Ketron, along with Representatives John Hood, Curt Cobb, Donna Rowland and Kent Coleman said.

The city wants to widen the road to three lanes and install curbs, gutters, sidewalks and lighting.

The road came into the spotlight in July after the death of 11-year-old Lakeisha White of Hopkinsville, Ky., who died after Detective Sgt. Ron Killings struck the child with his sheriff’s car.

Following the incident, area residents started a petition asking the city to take the necessary steps to improve the road.

Its sad that a tragedy like that is what it takes to fix a road that has needed to be repaired for years!!!

The city and county are generally not accommodating to anyone using any transportation mode other than automobiles. Hopefully sidewalks and bike lanes will be incorporated in ALL new construction or whenever a major repaving is undertaken.
